Refugia will always be founded by me unless it ceases to exist and gets refounded. The region will not cease to exist as long as there are people in it. But, typically, good regions need a constantly active founder or they fizzle from a lack of fuel.

If there's good support and energy from the member base, that can do amazing things too, though.

Presently, Virandon will be the new delegate at Major.

We just did those to kind of substantively represent environmentalism in law. We had floated the idea of kind of revising them for the new year and having more than 20 members in the region, but didn't get around to it. There's no requirement to be able to participate except to have your WA here, and even then we can do exceptions. The whole thing was designed to be kinda open because rigid requirements and pledges of allegiance are suuuper creepy to me. :p

After a long break, I have decided to come to NS and continue on the progress I have hopefully made here. Sorry for the extended break.

I think it is important to recognize our disappearing marine life and polluting our ocean, an important piece of our planet that controls a large chunk of our oxygen.

Ghost gear (aka lost, abandoned or discarded fishing equipment) is one of the biggest threats to marine animals in our oceans. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), a staggering 640,000 tons of ghost gear is left in our oceans each year – more than one ton every minute!

Ghost gear is harming marine animals and contributing to our ocean’s plastic problem. In our report 'Ghosts beneath the waves' we found that:

- since 2012, the number of species affected by marine debris has increased by over 23%

- more than half of the ocean’s microplastics measured by weight is fishing related (view infographic)

- ghost gear contributes to an estimated 5 to 30% decline in some fish stock levels

- as many as 92% of encounters between marine animals and debris, including ghost gear, involves plastic debris

- almost half of all threatened species are impacted by ghost gear

80% of the largest seafood companies do not yet have an effective way of dealing with ghost gear and that’s why we’re asking them to do more to address this problem.

This just in that in British Columbia, the western-most and a very important province in Canada, there is a new LNG pipeline that is to be built, backed by the provincial and federal government. This is happening in the north of the province however, the hereditary leaders of the Wet'suwet'en indigenous group has denied the construction of the pipeline on their land.

This has sparked many debates and the RCMP, the police of Canada have even went inside their land and tried to forcefully resolve the situation, but they were forced back in vain. The Wet'suwet'en created a railway blockage in their land so that trains cannot pass through it, slowing the economy as a sign of protest. The provincial government wants the pipeline to go through at any cost and so do the federal.

The Mohawk indigenous group in Ontario followed suit with the idea of a rail blockage as a sign of protest and joined their friends in B.C. By this, the PM Justin Trudeau has had enough and calls it unacceptable but this only sparked more protests in big cities like Vancouver and Toronto by sympathizers and supporters of the Wet'suwet'en. This is currently going on and is a huge issue in B.C. and in Canada. The federal government is currently having talks as you read this with the Wet'suwet'en as they agreed to hold talks. It is the second day of the talks so far, but with no progress and the support and protests increasing in favor of the Wet'suwet'en.

In the name of environmentalism and Indigenous peoples around the world, this injustice has to stop now and the world and its people must look towards the future rather than destroying it and living in luxury right now.

Wouldn't it be funny if everyone else from the USA was from Florida? I'm from Texas, but I still consider myself as from Georgia because that's where I grew up.

Do we need anyone for government positions?

If you're interested, I know that we'll be needing people soon. Granted, I'm hoping we can build a government that doesn't come across as hierarchical, so I don't know how many positions we'll ultimately end up with.

I'm thinking definitely one for dealing with other regions, since that's taken up a lot of my time, and maybe someone who can work on keeping activity up (posting a lot in the RMB, setting polls regularly, etc). Ops is good to keep, but I think Refuge is going to be happiest there and I'm happy to keep her there. I'm also happy to help organise things and keep people running, and also writing up silly reports since that's what I enjoy. But I don't want anyone to feel like the staff are inherently more important than or above anyone else.

Yeah, I totally agree that we should format all changes to Refugia through the format of amendments to the already existing Revised Statutes. I think I should have my first one prepared to begin looking for a cosponsor by the end of the day.

A brief note regarding housekeeping: before I stepped away from the game for a bit, a referendum regarding an elected WA delegate was passed 9:2 (https://www.nationstates.net/page=poll/p=152545), however, I neglected to revise the RRS dispatch at the time. That has been corrected and the Revised Statutes have become ever more revised~

I agree, we'll need to mix what the region needs with what people are interested in doing so there isn't another weird gap in positions or anyone feels left out. Sooooo, it's not really a platform for me, but I'm going to spin up a Google Doc for thinking about what the council positions should look like and how they work so we can (literally) all be on the same page.

Because I reasonably think that just dropping a link into the RMB might be a *bad* idea, if anyone is interested in helping to draft/revise these positions, please telegram me to request a link to the doc on either Karen Matheson or Refuge Isle, (where I might see it sooner).
