If anyone wants something serious this evening, in about twoish hours the GA will be having a vote on the "Wartime Journalism Protection Act"

Most of my thoughts about it are here:

https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?p=37427144#p37427144

I'll be recommending voting against on the grounds that a government would be able to stop someone from reporting most of the things worth reporting on.

That really depends. With this nation, I'm really pushing for primitiveness. I'm not really sure why, but I'm pretty sure it's the novelty since not many people seem to want to touch that stat. I could probably do eco along the way, similar to how Ransium has done it, but I think it would take quite a few months.

Flohovistan wrote:Founding and running a region proved to be too hard for me, so I'm rejoining Refugia.

I agree that trying to run a region on NS is a little bit on the stressful side. There's a lot of pressure to keep things up, especially when people in other regions are watching to see if you'll flop. The thing that gave me a lot of motivation for running Refugia last year is that it's always been difficult for me to feel like I fit somewhere if I don't make a place, myself. So probably other people feel that way too, right? So naturally, the biggest goal in Refugia is that this is a place where you're allowed to be even if you're not blowing people out of the water with everything you do.

Outside of that, may we can do something interesting that people aren't expecting every now and then~

I just saw a video of what happened in Beirut, Lebanon with an explosion at the port there in the city and it is absolutely jaw-dropping. I was wondering why it was such big news because explosions do happen from time to time at facilities such as those but that explosion was on a whole other level. Allegedly it was felt and heard all the way in Cyprus which is 180 miles away from the port. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93tV6-0Ugwk

Oh my god that's messed up. It's really wrong what happened there.

Melenavenia

Flohovistan wrote:Oh my god that's messed up. It's really wrong what happened there.

What's worse is that it appears it could've easily been prevented if the substance that caused the blast which has been identified as ammonium nitrate which was stored at the port after being taken off a Russian Moldovan-flagged ship MV Rhosus which had docked at Beirut in 2013 (the ammonium nitrate was stored in 2014) had been safely disposed of in some way rather than in a big 2,750 ton pile at the port.

Ammonium nitrate is a chemical vital for fertilizers and explosives which can only be set off in this form via explosives or fire (fire in this case caused it to explode) so it was highly irresponsible of the port authorities in charge of storage to leave it there in such massive quantities. The blast left a massive crater in the port. https://newscdn2.weigelbroadcasting.com/EPhW4-1596645408-171116-blog-hypatia-h_6e7433f9171ff0c6cf45429f89eb4b46-h_39e07d778d16ef93187f4510f36cede4.jpg

The blast damaged most of Beirut either through directly impacting it with the explosion or causing damage with the massive shockwave and damaged hospitals throughout the city making some of them unable to treat patients normally. One hospital had to resort to treating patients outside in the elements due to the extensive damage that killed several staff members and injured many patients. The blast also destroyed much of the country's grain (and they were already experiencing food shortages due to the economic collapse from the COVID-19 pandemic) and it was reported that it left Lebanon with less than a month's worth of grain in reserve.

Duolian wrote:The only giant explosion I had on my bingo card for 2020 was Yellowstone. I saw just the before/after pictures for this on a news article and it looked devastating.

I can say that if Yellowstone exploded it would be much bigger than this. If I were to think there would be a massive explosion I would imagine it would be related to Iran and/or Saudi Arabia and their Middle Eastern Cold War.

Be careful with endorsing me I'm only 1 endorsement behind Sylh Alanor.

Yellowstone erupting would definitely wipe out the entire left half of the USA and possibly cause a catastrophic cascade of events that could kill ~5 billion people. My 2020 bingo board is helping keep me optimistic. Oh, new species of hornet mercilessly decapitating friendly bees? Well, at least Yellowstone hasn't erupted!

My other way to stay positive is by logging on to nationstates and allowing as many immigrants in as possible, but sometimes I don't have issues in my queue, so I make do.

Yellowstone's not gonna erupt in the near future. It's a possibility, but it probably won't erupt within our lifeftimes. By then, we'll have developed technologies to counter the effects of the hypothetical eruption. So rest at ease... 2020 won't be the year of the apocalypse.

Nuke(s)? Or do you mean something else?

Speaking of nukes, does anyone want to be our point-person to coordinate N-Day this year? I've received an offer from Canopy, one of the largest alliances, to have us join, but I'd like to have someone in or related to Operations be in charge. It should be super easy; last year Refuge had to coordinate things more or less entirely on her own, since it was more or less over for Refugia by the time I got home from work. Being within Canopy would require our person to more or less have a couple discussions with the highly experienced people there and give the rest of us instructions on what would be expected of us.

This would also be a great way to build up experience if you're interested in eventually getting a Councillor position ^-^

I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity if anyone wants to be a part of a large group project. As well, Canopy is the region that is least likely to be decimated by radiation, as they are almost entirely defence-oriented. I will be largely unavailable for N-Day this year, so if anyone else would like to help out in this project, you can participate with them when the time comes and represent Refugia at the same time. They will have a command group there that will provide some specific guidance about what to do, so you won't be entirely lost

Doublepost! But I'd like to gently recommend Refugia vote for the current GA repeal that I am toootally not connected to in any way.

My positionis that a resolution which aims to provide legal protections for journalists should be written mindful of the perspective of a country that does not wish to protect them, rather than one that does. If a resolution is able to, in several different ways, allow the country to ignore all of those protections if it wishes or doesn't care for press coverage, it doesn't actually provide any protection at all. Additionally, because the exclusions have been explicitly written in, they cannot be resolved by band-aid resolutions, subsequently, and so the whole process must start over.

When you have a high number in environmental beauty and/or eco-friendliness (I'm not sure if it requires both), it translates as having a lot of forests in your nation. Eventually you may get issues that will help lower the number of people lost in the wilderness, but for now, it's just a tradeoff for having a nation with a healthy environment.

There's trading cards you can get from answering issues, and a whole in-game market based around them, the issues themselves that let you RP your nation, and a whole host of forums discussing everything from WA resolutions to RP threads, to real life politics.

I know there are a couple people in our region that have a little experience with cards and WA resolutions as well, plus some with experience with raiding, the other big cross regional activity.

Congrats to both of you, those are huge collection completions!

Hello! People have already briefed you but I didn't want to miss out on welcoming you.

Sending out another call for this! Please let us know if you'd be interested!

I recently started wondering if the USSR, China and other nations that have called themselves "communist" are actually communist. I think that they are/were, in fact, dictatorships billed as communist.

If you really think about it, communism is "a people-driven nation where the economy is controlled by the government." USSR, PR China and other communist nations don't really follow the first part of the idea of communism, considering the terrible quality of life in those countries and the people killed by the government.

Thanks for your well-wishes. Stressful as always, but at least I got it done

Until the next time, anyway 👀

USA related: I've recently started to get old clips back from the 2008 and 2012 elections recommended to me on YouTube. It is interesting to look back at them because I wasn't old enough to remember the 2008 presidential election and wasn't knowledgeable or interested in understanding the 2012 presidential election. I've been looking back and marveling at the differences between then and now during those elections when it was first John McCain vs. Barack Obama and then Mitt Romney vs. Barack Obama and I've been quite amazed by the changes in politics since then.

However, you can see in this clip from 2008 McCain defending Obama when two of his supporters who were allowed to be on the microphone spouted bigoted nonsense and it made me think about how now this type of stuff is embraced by certain individuals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIjenjANqAk

Many forms of government are fine ideas on paper but in practice, this tends to happen. It turns out the main drawback of any power plan is.... corruption.

The premise of my nation relies on everyone taking personal responsibility, being honorable, and vying for respect, but in reality, it would break down almost immediately because of exactly this.

Yep, 100% on the mark. Hard-to-run forms of government, such as socialism/communism, are easier to corrupt, which has been seen throughout history. The premise of communism is a corruption-free government, but communist nations have not achieved that, so I would be hard-pressed to actually consider these nations "communist." My nation, Flohovistan, has gone through some questionably ethical changes, including making certain government ideals illegal, but my nation has good civil rights, which is more than you could say for most current nations, and an amazing economy.

hey guys, not sure where to find this info but i remember hearing something about war in this game? A lot of "Condemn" WA Resolutions reference it, but so far nothing I have found even hints at war/subterfuge. Can anyone clarify?
