Melenavenia wrote:You can vote and even write up and submit your own resolutions to be put up to vote. Research is always recommended when doing either of those things.

I see. Research is a given. Don't want to write up a resolution that isn't backed by evidence.

Is voting the only thing that can be done in the world parliament?

In addition to what Melenavenia said, you can also endorse other nations in the region. Endorsing the delegate, Sylh Alanor gives us another regional vote in the World Assembly.

In Refugia, if you've been in the region for seven days, being a WA member also means that you are a member state. Member states can run for office, vote on regional law, and embassy referendums.

Indeed, we just finished elections. Our regional law is here: https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1200707

And when there are things to vote on in the voting site, we'll post an announcement here. Presently, there's a vote on whether we should open an embassy with The East Pacific. You can't vote just yet because you haven't been in the region for seven days, but you'll probably be able to vote in the next one.

If you just keep answering issues, you'll get there. They start socialist nations off very low, but it's not too hard to overcome that with time.

Welcome, Kariforunia, Giant Redwoods, and Imahgen, to Refugia! I hope you each enjoy your stay. If it applies to you, please pay attention to the rest of this message.

Refugia aims to be a friendly, laid-back community, which is open to players of all skill levels. Nations who wish to become more active in the region, however, should consider joining the World Assembly (WA). WA nations are able to vote on international law, and receive exclusive benefits within the region, such as the ability to vote in regional polls and elections, get a spot on Refugia's map, and even run for office when elections come up! If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article.

If you'd rather just chill with us, that's perfectly fine as well. We have an active Discord server, an offsite forum, and frequent discussions on the regional message board (RMB), which everyone is welcome to participate in!

If you have any additional questions about the region or how NationStates works, feel free to leave them here, on the RMB. If you're interested in joining the Discord or offsite forum, look for the links at the top of Refugia's World Factbook Entry (the big text box at the top of our regional page).

Once again, I really hope you enjoy your time here, and look forward to seeing more of you soon.

I voted for even before seeing who wrote it, and seeing your names (yours and that of Sylh Alanor) was a nice surprise. Excellent resolution. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to everyone for all the support! It's been a huge help.

So tonight Condemn The Communist Bloc [https://www.nationstates.net/page=UN_view_proposal/id=kazakhstan_3_1614661479] goes up for a vote. This two line proposal is not normal or useful and so does not warrant a great deal of writing. The details of TCB - an NSLeft affiliate - aren't really worth pouring over. It's a referendum which doesn't meet the site's normal standards and mostly reached vote out of spite. This writeup from the Discord server articulates it well:

Refuge Isle wrote:Often times people approach the Security Council from an impassioned standpoint, seeing a target and wishing to commend or condemn it for its surface-level, superficial values. The spirit of these players is admirable, but the standards of the Security Council are high. Spur of the moment proposals without research and detailed specifics do not do their targets justice, nor do they paint a path to success for their authors.

Players who put vastly more effort into a relentless telegram campaign than the construction of their proposal will reach a predictable end, for ultimately the worth of a World Assembly resolution must stand on its own at vote. As this submission cannot, it falls to voters to reject the resolution in favour of those of a higher quality and greater volume of substance.

Needless to say, I'll be voting against as soon as this goes up to vote. It's either a troll resolution or someone who has aggressively (and with occasional hostility) defended their sub-par proposal and ignored all feedback. The best way to move past this is by going through it, and making sure it's a big enough shutdown that they don't try again.

Lower French Gregballs, Typica, Haremm, Melenavenia, Newvigen, Araine, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho, Indimu, Republic Of Central Darfur, Kariforunia

I will of course also be voting against. The way this proposal has created so much awful trolling and sometimes straight up cruelty in the SC forums is not something I’m chill with, not to mention the resolution is barely existent and completely meaningless.

We're having a bit of a mourning period, as the founder was pretty beloved (though I didn't get to meet them myself). The main problem is that our constitution was somewhat not very prepared for the founder to CTE.

It's all gonna be fine though, I just like the good vibes from Refugia so I'm hanging out here.

Meant to have this up a bit earlier, but here's some info on Prohibition on Honor-Based Violence, set to go to vote tomorrow morning.

Proposal: https://www.nationstates.net/page=UN_view_proposal/id=greater_cesnica_1615053244

Forum thread: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=499231

Finally, something we can talk about on a more mechanical level. Honor-based violence refers to a practice seen in some countries and cultures around the world, in which a person who is said to have disgraced themselves/their family/their community may be punished with violence or death. The specific definition used in GC's resolution is "Defines "honor-based violence" as an act of violence perpetrated against an individual by or at the direction of a relative or any other member of a community, due to the perception that the individual has brought shame or dishonor upon their family or community, or has otherwise violated an honor code," and this seems reasonably constructed. It goes on to prohibit both the act of honor-based violence and the use of such a defense in criminal proceedings, and requires that this violence be treated at least as seriously as non-honor-based violence in prosecution.

As it goes, it's pretty solid. I haven't seen any obvious issues in its construction. Potential concerns might include whether it covers violence against groups - which it does, so long as they can reasonably be viewed as groups of individuals - and whether it's duplicating existing legislation, which, surprisingly, it doesn't seem to be. At the moment, I find it agreeable, but I'd appreciate some other opinions in case I'm overlooking something.

Outlawing it will prevent a massive bushido code culture forming (In a negative way!) And will allow justifiable murder over honor.

Politicizing the cancer diagnosis of another player for the sake of passing a Security Council measure is jaw-droppingly immoral even by NS standards. Even if this is resubmitted without the rules violation, you'll find no support from Refugia's office of World Assembly Affairs for this brazen use of social leverage.

And to be clear, this is in no way a judgment on Owlograd or their potential worthiness of a commendation. I wish him the best with his illness and would be more than willing to evaluate a proposal at such a time when the social climate doesn't pressure people into agreeing.

Message from Verdant Haven:

Greetings, friends and allies of Forest!

In last night's major update, beginning the 7th of March 2021, Forest's founder and longest resident, Errinundera, CTE'd. Though we are unsure of the causes, and hope that all is well for the person behind the name, this event was not entirely unexpected. For some time we have seen the signs, and were able to lay out all the steps and safeguards necessary to ensure an orderly transition to Forest being a stable region, led by our WA Delegate and our Forest Keeper. Because of the nature of Forest's democracy, this change will not significantly impact the long-term function of our government.

As we speak, the necessary Constitutional procedures are being undertaken to make this transition smoothly, and we do not anticipate any significant interruption or alteration to our status, alliances, commitments, or activities. In accordance with Forest law, long-ago written for just such an occasion, a password has been placed on the region while we complete this process. This is a temporary state of affairs, and we anticipate that within a short period of time, the necessary votes will have been completed to allow the lifting of this password, and our long-awaited transition to the next government.

We thank you for your ongoing friendship, and look forward to many years of continued growth together.

Verdant Haven

We're just a casual hangout community. We don't have any official rp outside of some set dressing elements (which include robots, to be fair). You're always allowed to be here no matter your nation's IC setting, as long as you're not being harmful to others.

Hi! First of all, we don’t do fascism around these parts. If you’d like to rp a fascist or near fascist nation, please do not do so by posting on our rmb as not everybody here wants to hear about genocide and oppression.

Second of all, please stop spamming the rmb. If you have more than one thing you need to say, please combine them into one post, thank you kindly ^-^

Be careful with that hot take.

Yesterday was very busy and I didn't get to post anything about Condemn Minineenee because I have no sense of time, but I should briefly elaborate on why the region tends to favour it. Essentially, from my understanding, this is a user who's participated in a lot of very high effort coups over a long span of time, playing key roles in difficult operations. It's quite a well written SC proposal, especially by recent standards, and the target has done enough IC bad stuff that it's warranted. We'll hopefully soon have more detailed writeups on SC justifications, but in the meantime I hope this is useful in clarifying. Will try to have up about maritime law tonight, maybe before the big fight.

I think my political leanings are mostly centred around whether or not the quality of the writing, and the integrity of the message supports, the SC as an institution. To that end, Xoriet is always capable of putting something together to reinforce people's faith in the SC and add to the body of writing contained within it. The resolution makes a compelling case about the justification for why the target should be condemned. Additionally, the target is an ancient nation whose days of glory and controversy are long past (even the event with Osiris was only a month into my first founding), so one can be reasonably assured that the resolution is not aimed to inspire people in their charge, but recognise them for playing the role of the villain for years and years past.

This, to me, is the definition of when a condemnation ought to be used.

For some reason, I've always hated to be told to do things that I already know I need to do. Like when somebody tells me to go do the kitchen and bothers me about it for 30 minutes afterwards, that will instantly make me massively irritated. I also hate when other people tell me to stop having some emotion or another cuz that's not really how the world works

Anyone who abuses another living thing. I don't care if it's a dog, a cricket, or a human being. If it has a brain, it suffers, and unless someone has a good reason for making an animal suffer (like food or their own protection/wellbeing), I will legitimately hate them for it.

Welcome, Lusimana, Fracoda, Newest Dekks, and Myzapithi to Refugia! I hope you all enjoy your stays.

半真面目な質問をしてもいいですか?

There's a running gag amongst leftists in the US about the conservative elements and that they mostly give little explanation as to why they dislike socialism.

Besides the Cold War, are there any other reasons socialism or even communism is so opposed nearly globally? Or just in the US?

I deeply apologize for asking this question since it is a semi serious question.

Well I can’t speak for everyone, however from what I see US culture is deeply rooted in limiting government power and having personal freedom, especially in the economic and financial sense (one of the causes of the Revolutionary War was over taxes) and communism is completely opposed to that, with its centrally planned economy and all.

And worldwide, there’s also the fact that besides for a select few outliers who manage to blend socialism and the free market well (like Scandinavia), most communist and socialist countries utterly fail at both the continuation of democratic institutions and economic prosperity, as the government needs to force its own citizens into the roles it assigns for them, and then the people have no motivation to make good products or innovate since it’s the government forcing them into that job.

Well, socialists have been under heavy negative propaganda since socialism started existing. It's no coincidence that Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto - considered one of the founding texts of modern communism - literally begins talking about how parties accuse each other of being communists. This is easier to do in well off nations, because it's way easier to think about a socialist revolution when you're starving than when you're living a comfortable life (hence why the first large-scale socialist revolution occured in Russia, not in england or something). I live in an emerging country in south america, and even though they're way less radical today than they were in the 70's, the largest communist party here is larger than any communist party in the US could dream of being.

Kariforunia wrote:I deeply apologize for asking this question since it is a semi serious question.

If you're scared to ask this sort of thing here in refugia, you can always jump over to Forest for a bit to discuss politics or history or whatever else. We often talk about more ""serious"" subjects there, and since Forest has an embassy in Refugia you won't even need to move there to use our rmb. And of course, we always welcome visitors ^^

There's no need to worry about asking a serious question. The conversation is welcomed.

Everyone else makes good points, but one of the key elements to anti-socialist/anti-communist thought is US interventionalism. The United States has meddled in the affairs of so many countries where top officials viewed the rise of socialism/communism as a concern, and typically ruined the stability and sustainability of those countries in the process. Then the world stage looks at the deposed socialist personality as an example of how that can never really catch on. I think we'd have more functional examples of socialism at work and more evidence for its adoption if not for all that.
