Cadenzana wrote:Also, I've got a question. How do y'all feel about nuclear energy?

I believe that nuclear energy is better than coal and fossil fuels but not as good as hydro, solar, and thermal energy.

Nuclear energy's effects on the environment, animals, and people around the plants is not fully understood and the process of mining the uranium to fuel the plants releases carbon dioxide. The process of disposing of nuclear waste, which currently consists of burying it in appropriate capsules in deserted areas deep underground has it's issues too. What if the waste manages to leak from the capsules?

Also, nuclear plants are very good targets for malicious acts like terrorism. While coal and fossil fuel plants can cause huge explosions as well, only nuclear plants can leave an entire swathe of land uninhabitable (at least for a extended period) like in Chernobyl, Ukraine or Ōkuma, Japan.

Cadenzana wrote:

I like it and I think it's the future but I hope that that Thorium-232 will replace Uranium-238 as the main fertile and fissionable fuel.

I do prefer other types of sustainable energy such as hydropower or thermal energy, because nuclear energy can cause much bigger natural disasters than the rest and I live in Iceland where there are a lot of options for renewable energy sources.

Cadenzana wrote:Also, I've got a question. How do y'all feel about nuclear energy?

I'm not a great fan of nuclear energy because it can be very dangerous considering what happened in Chernobyl in 1986 and in Fukushima in 2011. It can cause serious consequences on health if something bad happens. And we also don't know what to do with radioactive waste. It takes several thousands of years to be eliminated. I think using nuclear energy is hiding from the serious consequences that it could have on the future of our planet. Actually, it's quite ironic to think like I think because as a French citizen a great majority of the energy produced in France is based on nuclear energy. But I don't think it's better than fossil fuels because I think it can cause worse consequences than these ones. Actually, I think that most of the people think fossil fuels are worse because it causes bad consequences right now on our planet and on our health but I think of the future and of our (potential) children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, ... So, yeah, I have a negative point of view on nuclear energy and I would really prefer to use only renewable energy.

Renewables can also be pretty destructive to the environment. Flooding huge areas for hydroelectric dams and the consequent methyl mercury, mining for rare metals and elements for solar panels, etc.

Yes. Just wait and do issues. Economy is the one stat that always goes up unless you're trying to actively bomb it.

The easiest way for me, personally, would be to go full on cringe unethical capitalist, then fix everything upon reaching >97 on economy, but I’ve been trying out different ways on different puppet nations, and I think it’s going okay.

So first, Economic Freedom is quite the important stat, and it helps define your WA classification, as shown by this wonderful dispatch by Refuge Isle, Refugia’s founder! Anyway, the higher the economic freedom, the better the economy. Socialist nations get -100 economic freedom, but this doesn’t really affect your other stats. Therefore, capitalist nations with a 25 economic freedom would be the same as socialist nations with a -75 economic freedom. Do note however that going too high would severely hurt your economy, which is why the default Libertarian setup as a higher economy than the default Anarchy setup that NS has, I believe. This info is most accurate for newer nations, and will slowly become less accurate along the way.

The other important stat would be Business Subsidization. Initially, I focused on Business Subsidization to increase eco-friendliness while keeping a good economy, but it seems to work for socialist nations that want a high economy too. Basically, choose every option that promises to fund an industry, and also tanked my Freedom from Taxation Disposable Income stats.

In the long run, you should remember to favor Business Subsidization over Economic Freedom, since that’s what tends to helps better as a socialist nation.

Like Van said above, time will fix it. You can see that my nation (along with a lot of the older ones here) have economies as strong as any capitalist nations. It just takes a while.

Goooooooooood morning, Refugi and assorted friends,

To follow up on my previously-scheduled announcement, the first official Refuge Game Night of my Culture term is set! We received nine responses on the poll for what time would be best tomorrow, and the answer -unanimously- was Midnight GMT (17:00 Eastern, 14:00 Pacific, 11:00 New Zealand, etc).

We will be playing Skribbl.io. Keep an eye on this space, I will post a link to the room approximately 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time, so that everyone can make their fun avatars if they do not already have one.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

So... here in Iceland we've had 29 earthquakes since midnight ranging from 2.9 to 5.2 on the ritcher scale. The biggest one was on Wednesday when the shaking reached heights of 5.7.

An earthquake of up to 6.5 is possible in the next few days and a volcanic eruption is expected in the next century.

I've been on the countryside for a week and I have barely felt 3 of the biggest, but now I've returned home to the capital which is much closer to the point of origin of the quakes.

If you want I can keep you informed about the circumstances in a daily, more detailed post covering all of the nerdy stuff and stats.

Just let me know:)

We only have envoys with regions we have embassies with. The job of an envoy is to provide updates to the region they are assigned to about important Refugi happenings and to report back about important things happening in the region they are assigned to. For example, I am the envoy for Spiritus. I report important things to them in their Discord server (and say nice things on the RMB sometimes!) and report important Spiritus events back to Refugia. A person who becomes an envoy is someone who volunteers to become one. I'm sure there are reasons why a volunteer may NOT be allowed to become an envoy but whatever that might be would likely be up to the FA Councillor to decide.

Araine received 13 first preference votes.

Forum thread: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=497846

This one does what it says on the tin. If passed, it would ban the perception of a person's sex, gender, or sexuality as justification or defense of a crime. It's refreshing to see a progressive, pro-LGBT piece of legislation in the chamber, and I don't see anything objectionable in its two operative clauses. That's really all there to say here; the rest is ideological, but any decent person ought to be in favour of this. And credit where credit is due, IA actually made a proposal significantly cleaner and easier to understand.

I feel the same. This one is pretty simple, I think it's great. I was happy to approve of this early and I'll be happy to vote for it early. As you stated, IA helped clean up the language a lot and that, plus the author's original intent did a ton to make this, as far as I can see, uncontroversial.

Eurdrea wrote:Hello, the Economy trend shows economic freedom right? Is it possible to see the trend in economic strength/growth anywhere?

The actual Economy stat (one of the top three in your drop down menu) is what you're looking for in terms of a rating of your country's economic strength. Economic Freedom is just the amount that your government oversees and regulates that economy, and is one of the determiners for your nation type. Economic Output, a third stat, goes up almost no matter what, though there are a few issues with outcomes that cut it.

On your main nation page (https://www.nationstates.net/nation=eurdrea) and your main stats page (https://www.nationstates.net/nation=eurdrea/detail=trend), it shows your economy (https://www.nationstates.net/nation=eurdrea/detail=trend?censusid=1) which is an index how much economic activity is in your nation.

Your economic output (https://www.nationstates.net/nation=eurdrea/detail=trend?censusid=76) is largely a derivative of your economy and individual industries/sectors, multiplied by your population. So, it will naturally grow over time as your population rises, but coming up with a speciality for your nation and trying to boost that industry will add some fuel to your economy and make the output grow faster. My economy is pretty much all book publishing and technology.

Your economic freedom (https://www.nationstates.net/nation=eurdrea/detail=trend?censusid=48) is most relevant to setting your nation classification (Scandinavian Liberal Paradise for you) and how well either capitalism or socialism can work in your nation.

In my private opinion as a Refugi, I fully support an embassy with the East.

I've been around TEP since last May, seeing the region with three different administrations. It's a place that I have sort of treated as my second job for the last year. From the inside, working as deputy minister of World Assembly Affairs there has let me see the kinds of hard working, sane, and rational people that populate the East's government and keep pushing it on. Zuk has great potential for top notch work, and I'm sure will provide stability for his region over the rest of his term. I see no reason why our regions wouldn't get along, especially since we already have a bit of member cross-over.

Hey everybody! With the office of World Assembly Affairs having been created recently, election season has come up pretty quickly. As stated in the Discord server, I'm announcing my candidacy for this position and seeking reelection, and I want to talk a bit about how the last couple of months have gone and what another term might look like.

Obviously there hasn't been a lot of WA activity here recently, at least on my part. February is always a difficult month for me, and it was compounded by the most destructive ice storm we've ever seen here knocking out power and communications for extended periods. It's been difficult getting back on track from that. It's also been a bit of a struggle engaging with the WA at times, given some of the legislation that's passed through; after the fourth death penalty bill went to vote, I think we were all a bit burned out, and that's something we ought to fix.

At the same time, given that this was a fairly short initial term, we did get a fair amount done. We published several IFV dispatches with in-depth analysis of proposals at vote, which were at least noticed by the outside world. Refugia's RMB continues to exist on people's radars as a place of WA discussion, occasionally referenced in places like OWL. And we saw Sylh Alanor become the latest Refugi to author and pass a GA proposal, with multiple other residents working on their own as we speak.

So, with that in mind, what's the goal going forward? I want to aim to start conversations about every proposal which goes to vote, engage people, and write IFVs for most of them - there will still be some that are too ideological to change any minds about, but there's lots of room for increased productivity there. I'm also hoping to continue to cultivate #floor-5 in the Discord server as a helpful space to ask questions and workshop drafts, and obviously the RMB is here for everyone's support too. In general, the name of the game this term is "more."

And the most important thing I've realized is that there needs to be more horsepower in this department to ensure that sort of coverage. Larger regions often task entire groups of people with arguing and publishing about WA legislation, and it's just not ideal for all of that to hinge on the councillor. With that in mind, if I occupy this position for the next term, I'll be appointing another community member to split duties and drive engagement on SC proposals, with the aim of meeting the aforementioned benchmarks. If we can do that, the office and region should be in a good place going forward with established practices.

I look forward to the coming election and term and have the utmost faith in the region.

-Natalie

For tonight, brief thoughts on Commend Roavin:

- This is probably the poorest writing I've seen in an SC proposal that's made it to vote. It's nothing but lists, with no real order or thematic structure, no context, and no real sense for why the things they did are important. Much of the substance here is nigh on impossible to digest without significant backstory information. The lack of storytelling or sequencing made this a chore to read all the way through, and it weakens their arguments. In a laundry list of ways Roavin contributed to The South Pacific, they include writing a commendation of another TSP user for their contributions. That doesn't track to me.

- The "Applauding" clause lists a number of other users, but these are nicknames rather than actual nation names, and no effort is made to clarify who these people are. This should be illegal in the SC, but for now it's only illegal in our hearts.

- The "Extolling" clause uses the word "them" in a way that comes very close to violating the personal pronouns rule, in my opinion. I doubt it's actually a rules violation, but it's very shoddy editing that it made it in.

I can't really walk away from this understanding whether Roavin deserves a commendation or not. Certainly if he does, this is a lousy way to go about it, and I'm not inclined to support this piece of writing.

Oh if I were a superhero, I’d be one of those heroes who cleans up after the actual heroes, so I’d probably have speed or flight so I could help save citizens, I’d probably have heightened vision or hearing so I could find people in need or things that needed to be dealt with. And I’d love to have a power where I could just hug someone and give them some strength to get through the hard times, especially if I was someone saving citizens because god knows they’ll probably be super traumatized.

Welcome, Medab and Anarchist Workers Of The World, to Refugia! I hope you both enjoy your stay. If it applies to you, please pay attention to the rest of this message.

Refugia aims to be a friendly, laid-back community, which is open to players of all skill levels. Nations who wish to become more active in the region, however, should consider joining the World Assembly (WA). WA nations are able to vote on international law, and receive exclusive benefits within the region, such as the ability to vote in regional polls and elections, get a spot on Refugia's map, and even run for office when elections come up! If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article.

If you'd rather just chill with us, that's perfectly fine as well. We have an active Discord server, an offsite forum, and frequent discussions on the regional message board (RMB), which everyone is welcome to participate in!

If you have any additional questions about the region or how NationStates works, feel free to leave them here, on the RMB. If you're interested in joining the Discord or offsite forum, look for the links at the top of Refugia's World Factbook Entry (the big text box at the top of our regional page).

Once again, I really hope you enjoy your time here, and look forward to seeing more of you soon.

My gosh, how fantastic. Your last term was co-authoring a resolution, and now you've written this one. World Assembly Affairs certainly is making waves. Hooray Refugia! \o/

Full support from me, of course. The rights of workers ought to be protected from employers who are only interested in exploiting them.

Workers are back-bone of the economy and everything. Protecting them from exploitation is important.

On side note of that. It seems that's some sort of vote thing, yes? Where do I vote on the matter?

It's a vote among all World Assembly nations on this site: https://www.nationstates.net/page=un

You can become a WA member if you have an email address and no other nations currently in the World Assembly.

You can vote on the World Assembly. You need to join the World Assembly though before you vote. You basically just need an email and they will most likely approve you. It will pull up on the left under the regions tab after acception. ;)
