Region: Refugia
Heya,
I'm putting together a proposal to modify the RRS. That proposal is here: https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1522370
Leave your thoughts about these changes below, this proposal is still in drafting.
Sylh Alanor, Araine, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho, Golden Gateway, Pantala And Pyrrhia, Republic Of Central Darfur, Kariforunia, Parapollacis
I remember when I was updating the delegate bits alongside the WAA Councillor amendment, you said it would be best to avoid using 'Member State' under the definition of delegate because technically, someone could become delegate without having had WA in the region for seven days. Is this a full on policy change for that?
For 7ai, I think you should keep the 'to', or change the sentence to say 'in reaching quorum'.
I think the rest here is pretty good! It's nice to have a method to replace the delegate in case something goes horribly wrong. I'll withhold seconding it pending further discussion, in the event that I've overlooked something.
Refuge Isle, Araine, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho, Republic Of Central Darfur, Kariforunia
I don't immediately remember that recommendation, but it was likely an error.
I think it's best, following comment from Humansanity in the chat, to have it changed since the current RRS does not consider the concept of outside influence seizing the delegacy. So, my thinking is that someone who is the delegate should only be able to be so if they're a Member State who has been here for a bit. Similarly, under a new election system, someone should ideally not be able to see a vacancy election, jump into the the region, with eight hundred of their closest friends, and reach Member State status before the end of the election solely to vote-stack for an outsider. Both of these are undesirable, and changing this term solves both concerns.
Done.

This all sounds good to me then :)

This accurately summarizes my concerns and proposes a suitable solution, so it sounds good to me

Hey all,
This is Araine. I've been locked out of my nation (says the password isn't working, but it's the same one I've been using for months, and I've had it written down). Not sure when I'll be able to get back on, but hopefully soon. I'll operate on this account for the time being. Hopefully, that's alright.

Welcome, Wobblylegs, Greater Algerstonia, Norwg, and Wedge Island, to Refugia! I hope you all enjoy your stays. If it applies to you, please pay attention to the rest of this message.
Refugia aims to be a friendly, laid-back community, which is open to players of all skill levels. Nations who wish to become more active in the region, however, should consider joining the World Assembly (WA). WA nations are able to vote on international law, and receive exclusive benefits within the region, such as the ability to vote in regional polls and elections, get a spot on Refugia's map, and even run for office when elections come up! If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article.
If you'd rather just chill with us, that's perfectly fine as well. We have an active Discord server, an offsite forum, and frequent discussions on the regional message board (RMB), which everyone is welcome to participate in!
If you have any additional questions about the region or how NationStates works, feel free to leave them here, on the RMB. If you're interested in joining the Discord or offsite forum, look for the links at the top of Refugia's World Factbook Entry (the big text box at the top of our regional page).
Once again, I really hope you enjoy your time here, and look forward to seeing more of you soon.

Hello! This is a statement from the office of World Assembly Affairs. Following a slew of poor legislation in the WA, we're expecting things to pick back up in the spring, with more proposals worthy of attention. As I noted at the beginning of this term (or the end of the last one? I'm not sure.), the department needs more horsepower to ensure we can get to everything to which needs gotten. To this end, I'm excited to invoke RRS 6(f)(iv) and welcome Emojitheft/Humansanity as Security Council Correspondent. HS has much more knowledge and aptitude for the SC than I do, and it's great to have him as a part of the community. He'll be writing Refugia's IFV statements regarding Security Council matters. I'm looking forward to working together to grow Refugia's reputation for in-depth analysis and critique, and I hope everyone will welcome him accordingly.

Heya friendos! We have just completed this month's endotarting competition, with myself and Refuge Isle abstaining from prizes. I kept counting results while I was updating everything, even though this technically cut off as of minor update this morning. As of now, I've got enough copies to give out 24 S2 Galway-Dublins, to everyone listed below in bold. I've gone ahead and included the results for everyone who has endorsed at least one person, so if you want to see how many you missed, click on the spoiler tag.
Thanks everyone, I will be sending out the cards as soon as this is posted. Congratulations to those who qualified for a card, and good luck next time to those who didn't.

Hello, might I ask for more information?

自動化とロボット.
Would automation like robots be considered in a socialist environment? Their benefits can't be ignored but their drawbacks affect the people directly with loss of job.
Would they be regulated? I'm interested in hearing anyone else's opinion on robot automation.
I know this is a weird question.
Lower French Gregballs, Sylh Alanor, Melenavenia, Araine, Free Las Pinas Ii, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho, Golden Gateway, Pantala And Pyrrhia
Well the way I see it is that no one can stop progress. People tried that during the Industrial Revolution as machines replaced artisans and manual labor, and they failed pretty badly. I personally think we should fully embrace automation, and that therell always be more jobs in the future for people that we cant even think of. Plus, with robots doing a lot of hard or menial work, standards of living will go up, and we could even implement something like a UBI, although that would require a lot of government regulation.
Typica, Melenavenia, Araine, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho, Republic Of Central Darfur, Kariforunia
Your questions are always welcome! I think I've appreciated all of them.
I think that automation would be welcome in a (modern, at least) socialist environment. We should all believe that everyone deserves not only enough to survive, but enough to be comfortable. Allowing people to pursue things that cannot be automated- creative practices mainly- would be good for everyone, I think. And that could be done most effectively by implementing a universal basic income (levelling the playing field) and paying for it by ruthlessly going after the rich.
Chacapoya, Typica, Narwhal, Refuge Isle, Melenavenia, Araine, Free Las Pinas Ii, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho, Republic Of Central Darfur, Kariforunia
It's not really a weird question, but rather a very interesting one.
Automation is gonna happen weather we like it or not, the real question is who is it gonna be in favor of. A socialist automated world could lead to people spending less time in jobs they don't like and more time in self-development and community development. Think about it, how much faster would science advance if researchers spent less time worrying about jobs they do only to earn money and more time researching their actual areas of interest? Same goes to art, architecture, etc... But that's only if the products of automated labor go to the people, and not to capitalists.
If automation happens under capitalism (which is what has been going on now), people will lose their jobs and livelyhoods, world poverty will go up dramatically, we're all screwed. One of the consequences of automation in these circumstances is that people without jobs don't have money, and people without money can't buy the products produced by automation. So at some point, the short term profit from automation would lead to long term losses because... Well... Capitalists depend on other people with jobs spending money on their products.
The issue of automation is something socialists should discuss more, because it's gonna be a very big issue really soon... As Sylh Alanor said, a UBI would be a possible solution for this problem. EDIT: Pantala And Pyrrhia also mentioned UBIs

In one of my other nations, we embraced robots. This led to riots (The Artificially-Intelligent robots and computers demanded full citizen rights) and to the collapse of our socialistic regime, eventually making us more liberal.

Hey everyone. Let's have a good old fashioned forum post about the next GA vote, the Blood Donation Safety and Equality Act.
Proposal: https://www.nationstates.net/page=UN_view_proposal/id=crowheim_1616453096
Forum thread: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=499938
This is a pretty straightforward one. It makes it illegal to discriminate based on gender, sexuality, race, etc. when it comes to donating blood. Only in cases where the donor carries a bloodbourne illness or would otherwise endanger the recipient may such discrimination occur, and standards of safety must be applied to all donors equally. It would also criminalize knowingly donating infected blood. That's pretty much all there is to it. The biggest issue is that it doesn't detail safety precautions for the blood donation process, but it still seems like more than enough to justify voting in favour of it. Let me know what you think.

アメリカの社会民主党の政治家.
Bernie Sanders and AOC(I believe that's what people refer to her as.) are known in the US and serve as a face of socialism in the US. I use that sentence with shakiness as those two aren't really socialist, are they? They seem a bit more social democracy then fully socialist. I may be entirely wrong however.
Personally, I think they are a slow start for the US to socialism.
What does anyone else think of the two?
(I'm aware of the organization they belong to, Democratic Socialists of America and their goals.)
Refuge Isle, Sylh Alanor, Melenavenia, Araine, Free Las Pinas Ii, Floofybit, Junitaki-Cho
Bernie Sanders labels himself as a democratic socialist, but hasn't really pushed much outside of basic socdem ideas. He's a very soft example of a good socialist politician. As for AOC, I don't have super high hopes. In a recent interview with DSA, she praised the Biden administration as progressive and criticism of him from socialists to be in bad faith.
Still, they're the best the US has at the moment, so I don't blame Americans for being impressed or hopeful about them.

これは簡単には答えられない質問です.
A online friend of mine has recently been demoralized about globe socialism. They have been asking if socialism really can win or if socialism will ever happen in a large scale movement again due to anti socialist movements.
This question is not a easy question but more of an opinion one.
Is socialism inevitable?

We practice socialism everyday in our homes. People just focus on the label. Also capitalism is based on consumption. The question should be what world govs will survive in a world heading into limited resources. When i mean resources i mean industrial materials , ecological manppwer etc.
Melenavenia, Araine, Floofybit, Kariforunia
I hate to be that guy, but whether socialism is inevitable depends necessarily on your conception of socialism. The European welfare states would be seen by rabid libertarians as socialist, while more or less any Marxist (except perhaps some market socialists) would consider them liberal capitalist states. Apologists of the Chinese government would claim that it is socialist, making socialism not only inevitable but already present, and so on.
We already live in a world of limited resources, though technological advancement makes previously unusable materials into new resources (in the sense that they are now integrated into the mode of production; that they are now exploited and given value). In my opinion, the question is what world governments are weak enough to be pressured into distributing wealth at any given time to a larger share of the population, since governments that are weak enough to be overrun by a revolution (and at the same time remote enough to produce a new system without foreign interference) are nowhere to be found nowadays, I think.

Greetings Refugia,
I would like to call for a second for this regional referendum. Its purpose is to explicitly allow the Ops councillor to conduct bans in the event that unwanted folks appear in our general vicinity. It also establishes a procedure for electing a World Assembly delegate in the event that ours is disassociated from known reality.

私には社会民主主義の友人がいます.
How can I convince someone who is a social democracy to a socialist? Are there any major cons to a social democracy that could help convince them to turn to socialism?
Or should I not try to convince them since a social democracy is better then unregulated capital.
I'm trying to not have this come out as if I'm enforcing my views on one another.

It depends on what your goal is, I suppose. I'm a proponent of 'never let perfect be the enemy of good', and I'd rather have the world's baseline shift to socdem so that we can continue pushing further left. If there are socdem people out there, and that's where they're comfortable right now, as far as I'm concerned they aren't our opponents on some sort of ideological stage.
You can keep talking with them about things and even occasionally challenge them on why they believe the way they do, but I personally wouldn't push them hard into a place where they're uncomfortable. That's a surefire way of creating someone who rebounds to the right because they find leftism to be too exclusive.

Seizing the means of production doesn't mean that there will be no managers, though. Seizing them is a matter of property, not of administration: managerial positions who are not owners are still laborers (even if they make up the 'labor aristocracy'), and they will have to have a voice in any form of self-managed business, though of course their incompetence can be more easily controlled by the rest of the workers. But, just to be clear, the bad management of a business isn't the issue at stake when, for example, Marx suggested seizing the means of production (since there can be privately-owned, very efficient businesses), but the fact that the laborers are being exploited by the owners of the business, who simply appropriate the surplus value without working themselves. That is the general issue with capitalism (at least pure, unregulated capitalism) and with work in general, I think.

Workers unions would be a counter to exploitation to a certain point.
Bapaving, Araine, Floofybit, Kariforunia
Of course! They could be and they often are. They are basically coalitions made to exert pressure on the owners while still not going so far as to seize the means of production.

Cool event. I appreciate the randomness but I feel the winner will be decided not on actual popularity and who is the best, but rather who manages to show up the most and has the most shiny badges.

Can anyone give some counter arguments to the age old "Socialism doesn't work" or "it sounds good on paper but doesn't work in practice". I hear it alot and am wondering if anyone has some counter arguments against it.

I've just realized the classification of my nation in Nationstates mobile keeps switching from "Normal" to "Gay Marriage State" (I've been using the liberal theme) and just "Normal" in Nationstates Web. I am so confused rn.

Question: Is there any way to change the time scale when looking at the graph of a nation's demographics? I want to see how some of my stats have changed more recently, but since my nation has been around for so long its hard to tell looking at the graph.

I believe you can do that with Stately android app. It's a bit tricky zooming with your fingers, but it's doable

Look this is unrelated to anything anyone cares about but I just really wanna share that I made my first large-scale edit on a wikipedia article about something I had a background on/knew a lot about. I'm feeling quite proud, yes.
I had no idea about this app, than you for the info

Welcome, East Aria and Illwak, to Refugia! I hope you both enjoy your stays.
If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article, and make sure to endorse our delegate.

Greetings all!
It would seem that a new SC proposal has been submitted for Commend Marrabuk
Proposal: https://www.nationstates.net/page=UN_view_proposal/id=andusre_1617450832
Drafting thread: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=500069
I'm open to hearing more feedback, but I'm currently leaning in favor of the proposal.
Broadly, I believe Marrabuk is a commendable figure. Fedele's coup of our embassy partner The East Pacific included 12 months as Delegate where he strategically hollowed out and diminished activity within the region to make it easier for his group to cling to power and, if needs be (as it did end up needing to be), couping the region. Marra did about as much as imaginable in 8 months to revitalize TEP's activity and reputation, not to mention a pretty extensive career doing other things before that. The writing reflects Marra's efforts in TEP's MoFA, role playing community, FA projects during Marra's term, and his leadership of TEP as Delegate after the coup.
Some critiques of the writing raised on Discord were that some of the MoFA reforms cited in the draft were eventually rolled back. My understanding may be inaccurate, but my understanding was that the reforms were built upon, not rolledback. If someone else has additional insight or understanding about that, I'm open to it. Additionally, I think something can still be Commendable even if the future Delegate un-did the action. Another critique was of the closing line crediting Marra for building "NationStates as a whole" when most of his contributions were to TEP. I think this is valid but not alone enough to result in rejecting the Commendation.
Anyways, I'm open to input before I put together the recommendation.

Generally agree with the above. Improvements in environment and general feel of a place can be hard to put into measurement. How do you rate an atmosphere, etc? But numbers don't lie and the East had a substantial amount of growth under Marrabuk's time, operating with very little resources to start. Magisterium rose from 10 members to 21. Endos on the delegate rose steadily from the 550 the coup had left TEP with, to 650 even before the Drew boom (which ended up at 750 by the end). EPNS was resurrected for functionally the first time since the dark ages, with a consistent output of content and a high readership.
There were people well more entrenched in TEP's government than I was, but largely all improvements that I can recall were build upon, especially in the massive FA apparatus. Seven notable embassies were opened by the revived Eastern government, including XKI, FRN, UDS, and Thaecia. All of which are strongly valued by TEP today. This is in contrast to Fedele's term which oversaw a fist full of closures with only two exceptions. The foreign affairs rollbacks from Marrabuk are mostly the result of Libertanny's unstable and volatile orders of the day, which has no reflection on Marrabuk's contributions during his time in power.
I'm, further, not troubled by the inclusion of the glistering generality "NationStates as a whole". Lots of things add to NS as a whole. Our RMB discussion adds content and activity to NS, for example, How Does articles give people outside our region information, etc. Certainly, a democratic GCR stabilising and forming a treaty with the largest defender power at the time adds to NS' general stability and habitability as well. The hard work people put into providing a diversity of active, functioning democracies that are community-minded cannot be understated. The statement is justified well enough.

うーん、人々が社会党に投票してすべての進歩を取り消すのを止めるのは何でしょうか?
People could easily vote in a pro-capital party and have all progress by the socialist party be dismantled. What stops that while retaining the democratic ideals?
I should also go to sleep now.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Reducing Microplastics before it goes to vote tomorrow night? I'll write up a proper IFV tomorrow, but I'm currently quite in favour of it as a solid piece of environmental legislation. It deals with limiting the use and production of microplastics - tiny bits of plastic which account for a lot of pollution and debris. I gave some feedback when this was in drafting and haven't seen anything to change my mind on supporting it, but I'd appreciate a second look in case there's something I've missed.

I took your silent likes as agreement and wrote an IFV on Reducing Microplastics, which you can find below. (And remember that you can upvote dispatches you like, that they may reach a wider audience.) It's a bit barebones, but this is a thoroughly uncontroversial vote.
