I guess the ideology that closest fits my values would be Democratic Socialist, as I am firmly progressive on social issues and believe in the state protecting and providing for the citizens.

I will limit my answer to the IC (In-character) ideology of this country (LFG): Environmentalist, and liberalist-humanistic. I believe this fits more or less the professed ideology of the region. However, in terms of Socilism vs. Capitalism, I consider this country Capitalist-with-welfare, or rather slightly-left-of-center.

Good question! Personally, I identify as a left leaning centrist. Extremism, I think, drives me away perhaps more than centrism attracts me-- I come from a highly religious, extremely right wing household, and this has driven me away from both religion and rightism. My political views are still developing, and, in general, I tend to have mixed views on economic socialism, but I thoroughly support environmentalism, and therefore tighter regulations on business. I also think that state funded welfare should be a no brainier, and, quite frankly, my nation's lack of a universal healthcare program baffles me. So, I suppose I don't support any specific ideology, but I definitely lean towards leftism.

So what am I supposed to do here?

Eroias wrote:So what am I supposed to do here?

The answer to this is kinda complex. In one regard it's "whatever you want to". NationStates is kinda like minecraft in that the world is pretty open and the objectives area whatever you'd like them to be. There is content at the surface level, but if you want more, there is always more that can be had, even beyond however much time you have available to do them.

Probably life starts with issues, they're the most basic and come in automatically every six hours. A lot of people get competitive with their nation's stats and protective about what types of things their nation does well and how well they do them. Some folks put a lot of thought and effort into building their nation's image. What it looks like, how it behaves, coming up with art and backstories. Dispatches and factbooks are fantastic sandboxes to come up with your own articles because there's enough tools at your disposal to make a mock webpage. Ponderosa's factbook is a great example of this. (Hi Ponderosa).

Beyond that, there are things that function like international issues which are votes that happen in the World Assembly, which functions like a United Nations, of sorts. All the stuff there is written by players, sometimes literally by us, so that's also fun.

After that, a lot of regions (including ours) have regional laws and regional government. Our regional law is called the Refugia Revised Statutes and that forms how things work around here, what government jobs are available, how our programs work, etc. If you are interested in legislation, it's relatively straightforward to float ideas on how to amend the law, and send in a referendum. We also have elections every four months for regional councillor positions, the people who effectively run the region. Those councillor jobs are protecting the region, doing cultural and eco events, foreign affairs, World Assembly affairs, and public relations, essentially. And all of that work takes time and energy input, but keep things stable and running smoothly here, and those take people who like those kinds of fields.

There is a cards metagame, a challenges metagame, a sort of invasion metagame, and more. All of which can get substantially more complicated the more time and thought you put into each.

Alternatively, people can just hang out in the chat, spam, and play tetris. The world is your oyster, etc.

I was once called a "lumpen Maoist", but I don't think I identify as one. My work in the area of climate policy leads me to believe that the wrong people (i.e. specific fractions of capital) have too much power and control over too much of the world's natural resources, and that is why we will be heading for complete catastrophe. Wresting power and control away from these fractions and redistributing them into the hands of a diversity of groups who do more environmentally friendly and just things is the key. So I am not sure what this makes me. I like slogans, sometimes.

Hi all,

I am here to open a discussion on the submitted proposal Liberate The New Inquisition. The proposal would remove the password* on the region The New Inquisition which was once a powerful Imperialist region which engaged in offensive raids. For historical context, TNI was widely perceived as being one of the leaders of a broader "Imperialist sphere" along with regions such as The Land Of Kings And Emperors and later on the sinker region of Balder. However, TNI specifically fell inactive over time and was eventually passworded to ensure the region itself could not be raided.

The founder of TNI ceased to exist some time ago, and as a result a Liberation was proposed to remove the password on the region so defenders can engage in offensive actions against TNI. It is worth noting the founder has ceased to exist and come back twice and likely can continue to be brought back in perpetuity.

I am strongly opposed to this proposal for three reasons and really wish it had not been submitted, my reasons are explained here, here, and here. In sum, my reasons are:

1. Even if it was desirable to open up TNI to be raided, it won't work. The founder is currently around and will inevitably come back. A SC Liberation can't actually remove a founder-imposed password (or a password of a region with a founder). Even if the founder were to CTE again, then defenders would move in to raid the region, they would pile it (meaning deploy WAs into the region for the purpose of gaining influence to reject the remaining residents of TNI), and then the founder would return after several weeks of defenders wasting time and resources on this project when their resources would be far better used elsewhere.

2. The way this proposal has been advocated is haphazard af. The only justification presented is vengeance which is not a persuasive or forward-looking model of justice, and is generally against the values I've heard expressed by most Refugi. Insofar as those values should implicate our SC stances, vengeance is not a sufficient reason to offensively liberate a region. Maybe if it could be directed towards some kind of productive purpose it could be justified, but in this case there is no such justification advanced by the author or that I can imagine more generally in this specific case.

3. There is no plausible path for this to pass given the extensive FA prowess of the Imperialist sphere. While sometimes it's worth picking losing fights, this is not one of them and by advancing this and doing so in such a poorly executed manner, the author does a disservice to the cause of defending more broadly. While Refugia is not defender, I personally as a defender am frustrated by this project's poor execution reflecting back on defender politics more broadly.

It's worth noting that Refuge Isle has authored this indict of defender counter-invasions of raiders more broadly.

Anyways, open to additional input on this matter!

Huh, that's a real neat idea. I am definitely doing that too, but with my own NS flag!

For RL flag suggestions though, maybe Canada or Norway? Those are very pretty flags, and incorporate red like the other two.

Thank you for the kind welcome. I look forward to being a part of what looks to be a active and well run region. For the moment I will abstain from WA membership, it’s seems to have become some what trivial with a resolution being passed one week only to be over ruled the next. I believe fun of this game sits within the regions themselves, which is why I’m excited to be here.

It's totally your choice, of course, and if you'd prefer to stay away from the WA for personal reasons, I totally understand. That being said, signing up for the WA and cross-endorsing other people in the region improves our say in matters of the GA and SC. We can't make things better if we don't participate.

But to what ends? There is no resolution passed in the WA, GA, or SC that has any actual bearing on region or nation legislation. My nation is run by the decisions I make on the issues, regardless of whether or not any assembly approve. Power to influence decisions that carry no weight isn’t worth the votes.

The WA allows member nations to vote on (GA) proposals, which, if passed, have measurable affects on the laws and statistics of all WA nations. A piece of legislation which advocates for environmental protection, for instance, would collectively (albeit only slightly) increase NS's eco-friendliness, while one that advocates free market policies would increase game-wide levels of economic freedom.

Joining the WA also has another appeal-- even if you don't participate in the legislative side of the game, endorsing other nations in your region helps to ensure regional stability, and in the case that something were to happen to that region's founder, protect the region from any successful invasions.

Those are good points but a marginal change for the constant propose/repeal doesn’t seem to show for anything. As for the invade point, that’s a positive although that can also be closed down by the regional officers.

I do agree that it's not a particularly influential system, but you can't win every battle, and quite frankly, if legislation was weighted more heavily, game stats would be absurdly chaotic, and issues playing would border on uselessness within member states. People oftentimes don't agree, and so naturally, proposals will be created and discarded as the playerbase's standpoints evolve, but that doesn't make WA participation useless. Plenty of proposals, if well written, end up unrepealed.

And yes, regional passwords can be put in place, but locking down a region which relies on in game recruitment is more often than not an undesirable outcome, as it stunts regional growth and ultimately results in a dead region. Additionally, it can only be done if officers catch the invasion in it's midst, and coup attempts are usually either covert or highly synchronized.

Regardless, the choice is entirely yours.

We have a lot of new people these days, which is super cool, but there hasn't been a whole lot of conversation in the RMB. I'm curious to learn more about your nations, let's share some cool facts!

Sylh Alanor is a republic made up of elves (the Alanori or Elvhenan). I've based a lot of the elements of the country off of Dragon Age's elves, specifically the ancient ones. If you've been around a while, you've probably seen me put elvish phrases in my regional dispatches. Here's what they mean!

0 wrote:An'eth'ara - "Hello, this place is safe"

na lethall’en - "dearest friends"

Sule tael tasalal - "Until we meet again"

dar'eth shi'ral - "go safely on your journey"

And then in my personal dispatch collective, I used:

0 wrote:Dar'atisha, sal sura - "Go in peace, please come see me again"

And the capital, Ara'lath (or Arlathan in English) is a combination of "ara" and "lath", which means "home" and "love". Properly translated, it means "Heart's home."

Also, the country was ruled by an immortal queen for about 1800 years before it was invaded by Kuviran and subjugated. When the country was finally liberated, the queen (Silvehn), who was traumatised by seeing all of her people dying around her due to the occupation, refused to take her throne back and remade the country as a parliamentary republic.

So how about you all?

Well, Pantala and Pyrrhia is a name directly ripped out of the book series Wings of Fire (which is getting a Netflix series soon that I’m so excited for), and I’m a big fan of. Like the books, Pantala and Pyrrhia is made up entirely of dragons, of all different colours and types. The government is sort of like a Commonwealth of various tribes of the dragons, which are ruled primarily by Kings and Queens.

The population is very small, at a couple of tens of thousands, about half of which live in the capital port city of Thirnoe, which doesn’t mean anything in particular. The rest of the population lives throughout the very mountainous peninsula, with small villages tucked into caves or in the old forests nestled in valleys.

Despite it’s small population, the nation is very genetically, culturally, and religiously diverse, with dragons having slowly evolved to fit their surroundings.

I’m going to do an IC factbook about the country that goes deeper into lore I’ve made, but I haven’t yet had the time, and if anyone else in Refugia wants to have diplomatic or cultural relations just TG me!

I made up Velossa to be a mix of European cities I’d travelled around, but mostly it’s based on the Venetian Republic. Like the real thing it’s a city state known for monopolising maritime trade. Like a mix of Venice, Amsterdam and Bruge, Velossa is a city that is a maze of canals, palaces town squares and monuments to events from long ago that nobody really remembers the significance of - but they look good.

While not a great military power per se, Velossa being a hub finds itself of focal point for espionage, intrigue and has a nack of influencing events to go in its best interests or profitably in the same way another country might use an army.

I like the whole Venetian aesthetic of a grand and decadent late medieval city with masked balls, fireworks and assassins creed-eqsue roof top chases so I write that in.

Democracy hasn’t quite developed in Velossa as it has in other nations. The ruler, the Doge, is elected from the Council of the Ten who are themselves elected exclusively from the 114 noble families of Velossa. While it’s true the citizenry don’t have voting rights they are entertained with gaudy or gruesome events frequently enough and their legal and medical needs are provided for sufficiently that there has never been a serious challenge to this. Indeed the bodies gibbeted on display as traitors in St Wenceslas’s Square are over ambitious nobles.

So feel free to visit Velossa, enjoy the canal tours, culture and carnivals. But keep an eye on who is holding your luggage.

Inasaki I came up with while working on an rp server for my faction. The irony is in the rp they're heavy communists who are all about fighting. Here everyone's chill and makes bank. One thing I def kept was the Marboks and Cactobos. Cactobos being a chocobo rip pretty much and Makbras being massive sneks that grow from 5 feet to 20 feet. Inasaki will always be the Australia of every place it exists lmao.

After giving it a hard thought, I decided to vote against the GA Resolution "Citizenship at Birth" https://www.nationstates.net/page=ga

I feel it's dependency on parents makes the resolution needlessly complex while further providing no support for orphaned children lacking documented heritage.

Hm, jus sanguinis is a relatively common practice, what about it makes it complex? Given the volume of text, possibly it would be more useful to have a separate resolution for children of undocumented heritage.

It doesn't really discuss jus sanguinis other than to say it's the common practice that we must now build on.

What makes the resolution complex to me is how it attempts to expand on sanguinis with potentially multiple conflicting citizenships that depend on the parents rather than some other nonkinship based default.

Maybe whichever nation most immediately capable of rendering aid to those likely under the age of majority perhaps. I'm not sure, but this seems lacking.

Welcome, Mashitivdent, Filburgh, Demo Anarcho Socialists, Scott Wrebitt, Capitilistnations, and Svenorska, to Refugia! I hope all of you enjoy your stays. If it applies to you, please pay attention to the rest of this message.

Refugia aims to be a friendly, laid-back community, which is open to players of all skill levels. Nations who wish to become more active in the region, however, should consider joining the World Assembly (WA). WA nations are able to vote on international law, and receive exclusive benefits within the region, such as the ability to vote in regional polls and elections, get a spot on Refugia's map, and even run for office when elections come up! If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article, and make sure to endorse our delegate.

If you'd rather just chill with us, that's perfectly fine as well. We have an offsite forum, as well as frequent discussions on the regional message board (RMB), which everyone is welcome to participate in!

If you have any additional questions about the region or how NationStates works, feel free to leave them here, on the RMB. If you're interested in joining our offsite forum, look for the link at the top of Refugia's World Factbook Entry (the big text box at the top of our regional page).

Once again, I really hope you enjoy your time here, and look forward to seeing more of you soon!

We like to endorse everyone here, as it helps build up the region's collective influence and protects us from invasions. It's also nice to hand out endorsements to show your support for other WA members, or if even if you you just want an endorsement back ^-^

Same tho. 3.5% of my nation's populace die from fox attacks, and whenever I get issues on it, I opt to leave more land to the foxes and tell people to suck it up. I think at this point, the animals are driving out the humans and not vice versa, XD.
