Araine wrote:Honestly, I wish I could say that I have a regular sleep schedule, but I don't. I get up at 6:50am on weekdays (hardly by my own will), but I go to bed at vastly differing times, which range from 9pm to 3am. And on weekends, I go to bed at roughly the 'same' times, but either sleep in from 8-11am or get up at 3-6am due to insomnia.

I slept for the entirety of my "free time" yesterday, going to try fixing my sleep schedule again.

Work begins at 9:30a. I like to stay up between 12a and 2a, and noticed before that sleeping around 12-12:30a is best while not compromising too hard there. Sometimes I'm bad, especially on the weekends though, and run into trouble there.

This month though, I've began trying to catch this morning livestream I like - usually an hour to an hour and a half long, with start times varying from 7am - 11am. I try to catch them all, but don't adjust my sleep schedule to account for any of them I see coming in advance. In rare cases, the VOD isn't preserved.

So I told myself to go back to my 12-12:30 thing, and pick my battles in the morning better - if I'm too tired or don't have enough notice to be waking up earlier than I expected, don't worry about it. If I slept early or am awake at go time though, why not catch it?

Gonna see how this works out. :D

Hey everyone, good news! We're doing the World Assembly Development Programme once again! This time we have some rare Season 1 legendary cards up for grabs, and more nations to endorse than ever before!

If you want to read my mad ramblings and also learn how to qualify for these drawings, check out this dispatch: https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1517113

And remember, endorsing is important. Not only does it generate Refugi influence (which can be collected nowhere else on Nationstates) and get you in the drawing for cards, but it also increases the amount of votes we get at the World Assembly. Since we started frequently talking about World Assembly issues last year in the RMB, we've come to be noticed by some of the authors, including having some of them stop by our RMB to talk to us about their proposals! We've become a little more visible and our voices are becoming more heard in the WA, which means we can make a difference in the areas we really care about. So keep up the good work, this would literally be impossible without all of the support you all put into the region! If you have any questions or concerns about things, please don't hesitate to chat about it here or in the discord server, or send a message to one of the Councillors. We should all aim to be here for one another, especially when things are still kind of scary outside.

I really enjoyed the Black Company books by Glen Cook and the Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolf. Both are kind of dark fantasy, and both deal with unreliable narrators as none of the protagonists want to admit some of the things they've done. The Black Company books detail a few generations of soldiers in the group as they deal with sorcerers and fantasy world events. The other series is almost impossible to explain, it's extremely trippy and weird.

I don't even remember all the books I've read, and I certainly don't have a favorite, but as far as recents go...

I read a novel a month or so ago titled 'Where The Crawdads Sing.' (I forget who it's by). I'm not a massive fan of romance, which it has a bit of, but I rather liked the rest of the book. It's a sort of coming-of-age novel about a girl who grew up in a run-down swamp shack with an abusive father, but who found an escape in the wilderness, managed to teach herself to read, write, and paint, and started documenting the surrounding wildlife.

Hi all!

We finally have a new SC vote! :Hooray:

This one is a Commendation for Altmoras by The Python and co-authored by CalRef member Westinor. For reference, the forum discussion thread is here and the submitted proposal is here.

I'm pretty conflicted on this one. I'll cross-post what I already said with my vote in the South Pacific with regards to the resolution*:

Humansanity wrote:I think this could be a lot cleaner in terms of getting my support if it were given more go throughs on the drafting process. The research and detail is definitely up to par but I think the narrative is lacking. This resolution reads a lot like a list of accomplishments (i.e. Hell stuff, Lazarus, defending in specific ops, defending via TGW, oh hey look Singapore!) but feels like it lacks narrative lead in/out or a broader framing for what Altmoras has done. Additionally, a lot of the clauses have a "so what" problem, e.g. they fail to explain why the accomplishment is Commendable.

[...] I'd prefer this get pulled and put through more paces of drafting. I know the author asked me for my feedback at the end and I fell through on providing it due to being a bit busy, but ultimately this doesn't need a list of feedback from other commentators but rather just more time to marinate and a bit more serious and honest energy from the author in boosting the writing at the margins.

As a South Pacifican, I voted for because it's a Commend for a member of the South Pacific and a defender, which is in line with that region's goals. However, Refugia traditionally prioritizes the quality of a proposal's construction and research, and I'm not entirely sold the proposal is up to par on those levels for the reasons I isolated above. This proposal demonstrably fails in some areas and is generally lacking anything to bring it to a higher level of quality. As a result, I'm currently leaning towards an against recommendation, but I'm open to hearing arguments both ways.

Thank you so much for this write-up. I voted against last night based on your recommendation, but took the time to close-read the proposal this morning and I think I'm going to switch to for. While the writing is uninspired and a bit all over the place (I especially would have appreciated the 'Celebrating' clause to be presented in chronological order), I don't see the types of problems that would lead me to normally vote against. As stated in the server and in your TSP response, the time has been put into research, and even if it could have been cleaner, I think it's good enough to warrant a vote in favour.

Some of my favorites (note that they're all fantasy or sci-fi because I like those genres the most xD):

"A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine

It's basically a book about a diplomat in an alien empire trying to prevent said empire from annexing her small space station where she comes from. The book is so good and I loved every bit of it. The culture of the alien empire is also really unique and is based around poetry, and the worldbuilding is simply epic. It actually inspired me to try and start worldbuilding one of my NS nations again, simply because it just built up a fictional society so well with a driven story.

"This Is How You Lose the Time War" by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone

Another one I read recently. Extremely bloody as a warning, but also a really beautiful novel. Basically about two time-travelling soldiers whose job is to change the past to create a future where their respective organization exists. It takes place in letters and it's honestly a beautiful story that I really enjoy. The organizations and the worldbuilding behind them is a bit confusing but in general I just loved it. A lot. So much.

His Majesty's Dragon series by Naomi Novik

I read this a long time ago! It's basically an alternate history-fiction novel where dragons are utilized as warplanes in the Napoleonic Era. It does get a bit long/boring sometimes, but it's one of the most unique series I ever read and remains my favorite to this day. The series is extremely long but it starts off with a (I think British) captain finding and claiming a dragon egg- and becoming its rider. It's pretty kewl owo

I've got to be honest, I gave them a shot when they first came out and got popular and it's was too dull to keep my attention, but I gave them to my sister who was ecstatic about them. Different strokes, different folks.

I don't really know what my favourite series would be if I read something today. When I was in high school I read a h*ckload of dragonlance and wheel of time, but especially for the latter one read through was more than enough. But now that I'm older, I have no idea if I'd still like them or what I'd like more. Life's just been on a different pace since then.

I just love anything by Brandon Sanderson, Terry Pratchett and Robin Hobb

those books are so cool, beautiful and inspiring.

The Lord of the Rings and The Arabian Nights were among my favourite books growing up. A recent book that I was really impressed by was King Leopold's Ghost. Non-fiction and really horrific though - documents the colonisation of The Congo (and the violence) by mediocre Belgian monarch.

I haven't read King Leopold's Ghost, but I know a fair bit about its premise. Absolutely horrific conditions and violence under his reign. I don't think I'd make it through an entire book.

Probably quadrilingual now? Indonesian/Malay, Punjabi, Mandarin (still speak it, but can hardly read or write anymore). Used to speak Bengali when working in Bangladesh but don't use it anymore. I live in a largely monolingual society now, and that feels very sad. Even more sad to lose languages...

Well, my first language is Filipino/Tagalog (Filipino being the Philippines's lingua franca, heavily based around Tagalog, but the terms are used interchangeably anyway), but thanks to American children's shows and English-dubbed anime I'm more well-versed in English. For instance, I usually translate stuff to English in my head, and Filipino only when I talk to older family members or during Filipino class. Since I will likely be pilot in the future like my dad, I imagine I'd try to pick up another language, or at least learn basic greetings in a bunch of countries.

I'm late to this question but I can't let an opportunity to talk about books get away from me.

My favourite books are Sanderson's Cosmere. His worldbuilding and character depth is unparalleled. Mistborn particularly is the first fantasy book I recommend to anyone to get into the genre, as it's a great well rounded fantasy series without the growing pains of Elantris or the more inaccessible Stormlight Archive. The prose is the only thing that lets the series down, and it improves over time.

Brief summary of my other favourite series (it's not very brief, I can't stop talking):

Murderbot:

The softest and most fluffy death robot ever to exist

"I was having an emotion, and I hate that."

First Law

Forget GoT, get your epic grimdark fantasy here

"We should forgive our enemies, but not before they are hanged."

Kingkiller Chronicles

mmmm beautiful prose mmmm

"Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts."

Wayfarers

heartwarming, joyous, optimistic, other nice words

"I can wait for the galaxy outside to get a little kinder."

Broken Earth

Jemisin is hailed as writing 'literary fantasy' on account of the union between fiery social commentary and epic fantasy.

"For all those that have to fight for the respect that everyone else is given without question."

Masquerade

Lots of themes, lots of pain, added gay. This series will break me.

"I will write your name in the ruin of them. I will paint you across history in the colour of their blood."

A Memory Called Empire

An intoxicating culture explored by wonderful characters

"Perhaps succor was enough to keep a whole population trapped, willingly."

Just a quick reminder that today is the cutoff for getting into the card drawing for the World Assembly Development Programme by endorsing the delegate! I'm going to extend this out another half hour before taking a screenshot and drawing from that list.

Good luck!

Also, I didn't see an RMB ruleset anywhere, but I think I'm going to go back to engaging in English out of respect for other people using the RMB who may not understand. :P

Lower French Gregballs, Typica, Sylh Alanor, Araine, Kariforunia

Welcome, Akkana, Kazumasen, Conboardia, Silbershire, Allokyus, The Haimotopian, Ekajyotivolke, Sakivia Krosta, Gre Hollits, and Not Louise Of Louiseland, to Refugia! I hope each of you enjoys your stay. If it applies to you, please pay attention to the rest of this message.

Refugia aims to be a friendly, laid-back community, which is open to players of all experience levels. Nations who wish to become more active in the region, however, should consider joining the World Assembly (WA). WA nations are able to vote on international law, and receive exclusive benefits within the region, such as the ability to vote in regional polls and elections, get a spot on Refugia's map, and even run for office when elections come up! If you're interested in joining the WA, check out this article, and make sure to endorse our delegate.

If you'd rather just chill with us, that's perfectly fine as well. We have an offsite forum, as well as frequent discussions on the regional message board (RMB), which everyone is welcome to participate in!

If you have any additional questions about the region or how NationStates works, feel free to leave them here, on the RMB. If you're interested in joining our offsite forum, look for the link at the top of Refugia's World Factbook Entry (the big text box at the top of our regional page).

Once again, I really hope you enjoy your time here, and look forward to seeing more of you soon!

Is anyone bilingual? What languages?

I'm fluent in both English and Filipino, tried learning French on Duolingo but I dropped it soon after I realized that I have to invest first in perfecting my English pronunciation before I try to learn other languages.

If I'm being completely honest, and I am, I don't go much for Astrology but I am an Astronomy fan! My personal favorite Constellations are Orion, Virgo, and Ursa Major!

加速主義は興味深いものです。資本主義をその限界点に押し上げる。

Left Accelerationism. Pushing capital to it's breaking point to inspire the working class to revolt.

It seems like an interesting idea. But seems a rough around the edges. What do other people think of the idea? Good or flawed?

Personally,I see the idea as good in theory but needs improvements in practice.

Apologies for a "serious" question of sorts. Just looking for other opinions on the belief.

I personally find the idea incredibly flawed. Forcing people to suffer in order to get them to rise up in a violent revolt which would inevitably result in the deaths of countless marginalized people, to possibly achieve some new state feels so uninformed to actual suffering. Also, the idea that worsened conditions will invariably lead people to the left rather than the right is a fallacy. If the left is ineffective, or pushing right leaders to accelerate capitalism, many would turn to the seemingly more effective side. There is also the point that "left accelerationism" makes the assumption that the workers are to be used as a tool, pushed to break, rather than empowered. The idea that socialists would purposefully oppress the working class I find fully contradictory.

There is also the elephant in the room that the modern idea of "accelerationism" was created by a neo-nazi. In fact, many on the right advocate for a version of accelerationism, whether hoping to cause a race war, as with the Order of Nine Angles, or merely a civil war, as with the Boogaloo Boys.

So, one has to ask, is it better to try to improve people's lives, if slowly, or to attempt to incite a revolution by oppressing the proletariat, many of whom would not have read the literature explaining that, no really, this is in your best interests.

良い点。

It's a belief best left in theory and forgotten.

I also was unaware of a modern accelerationism. Learn something new every day.

Ironically, one of the most famous examples of accelerationism in the past was that enacted by the Comintern in the 1930's. The idea was that capitalism was due to collapse any miunte due to policies being enacted around Europe, and that the Third Period had begun. This led to the German Communist Party declaring the Nazi Party "working people's comrades" and the unfortunate slogan, "After Hitler, Our Turn!". The German Communist Party was outlawed in 1933, shortly after the Nazi Party came to power.

Ngl I like the new law I passed, a 1 hour no phone talk. I know it's a bit controversial but I like the idea of having at least 1 hour to chat with those around you and get to know them. Everyone's on tech now adays so having some time to make potential new friends and such sounds like a nice addition, at least to me I suppose.
