Sylh Alanor wrote:I don't really have a lot to say about today's Security Council proposal, "Declaration on Hippopotamuses". It's a joke resolution, but since it's referring back to the olden days of NationStates, people will jump right on it no matter what. I'm keeping to my principles of taking the World Assembly reasonably seriously. After all, if people on this site were so concerned over not wasting any space as to repeal a 12-year-old GA resolution just a couple weeks ago, they should absolutely be against this :P

An interesting argument was made in Forest that hippos are actually very small in the scale of the universe. Therefore, the resolution is based on an incorrect assumption that hippopotamuses are large, and should hence be opposed.

Thank you so much for dropping by and giving us this explanation. I can say the same in the opposite direction; there are some people I met in TLA that I think are wonderful, and I value the time last year I was able to spend in the TLA server. Were things different, and had the wider NSLeft community not decided to involve themselves in our affairs, I think things could have worked out much better. That being said, things are the way they are, and this is definitely for the best. Best of luck Samon, you're a lovely person.

Hey everyone! Just gonna drop this in here. I totally spaced and forgot a GA proposal was going up to vote today. I've drawn up the IFV, but I would absolutely love some regional discussion on this. What do you think of the proposal? What do you think of my opinion in the IFV? Do you have some other things you'd like to have said or considered? Let me know ^-^

When I first read the resolution I couldn't shake the thought that it was... Unfinished, somehow. Like the proponent wrote the first draft and just went with it. I definitely agree that the definition for Factory Farming is very vague, and some points in which it is specific actually harm the proposal more than help it.

But still, even though it's far from perfect, I'll be voting in favor of it without many problems. As you mentioned in the dispatch, there's nothing that stops this resolution from being updated in the future, and the cause is noble (and important) enough to earn my vote.

Ok I’ve got a question or two about the Security Council.

1) What are up with all the “Commend [nation]” proposals in the security council?

To me they don’t really mean much and just look like people patting themselves on the back.

2) I’ve been looking at the proposals in the SC and the ones that are not “Commend [nation]” all kinda look like jokes, is the SC just for posting low quality joke legislation or am I being stupid and missing something?

Commendations and condemnations are indeed awards. Generally they are given to nations/players who have spent a long time working in various parts of their respective communities.

I'm not sure what else you're expecting for them to not be "patting themselves on the back". Awards work like this in real life.

Is it usual for there to be a lot of commendations/Condemnations?

Adawu wrote:Is it usual for there to be a lot of commendations/Condemnations?

Until a few weeks ago, the Security Council only had three categories. Commendations, condemnations, and liberations.

A liberation is a resolution that can remove a region's password if it was established by the delegate or a regional officer. It's used to open a locked region back up again, generally to repel raiders who may otherwise destroy it or keep it as a trophy. Because of the nature of that resolution only really being relevant in certain select situations, most of the time there is no appropriate candidate for a liberation. To your question, commendations/condemnations are the only other option, so yes.

The declaration type of SC resolution is very new. At the moment, a lot of people aren't sure what to make of it or what it should be for because there's no precedent. Some folks are interested in making it into a sort of miniature General Assembly, others to make canonised RP statements, other people regard the entire thing as useless because it doesn't have any mechanical effects like liberations do.

Hey everyone! Not a lot to say on the current GA proposal at vote, Repeal "On Multilateral Trade Talks", but I wanted to walk through why I'm voting against and why I recommend an against vote to others. This probably won't pass already, but it's still important to discuss everything we can, and to understand why something might be bad.

So this proposal is broken into three main clauses, each making (or attempting to make) an argument as to why the original proposal,

GAR# 221, should be repealed. Let's break them down quickly.

0 wrote:Concluding that GA#221 not only fails to require members to actually subscribe to free trade agreements, but in fact allows member state delegates to its negotiations to attempt to reach such agreements about exceedingly minor categories of goods and services with other delegates, so long as they meet Article 4's requirement that they "make a good faith effort... to come to mutually beneficial agreements which are in the best interests of all national populations involved" in doing so,

This is incomprehensible, as far as I can tell. I've reread it a dozen times at this point, including very close reading, and I cannot parse it for the life of me. If anyone can explain it, I would very much appreciate that.

0 wrote:Firmly refusing to applaud GA#221's goal of "reducing protectionist measures between [member]s," given that GA#26 "World Assembly Economic Union" - the third article of which had similar provisions to that of GA#221 - was repealed by GA#45 exactly because of the damage that the WA-sanctioned reduction of such measures can cause to the economies of the least developed members,

This argument breaks down to "we should repeal this because one of its clauses has some similarities to a clause in another resolution that was repealed". On its face, and honestly at any other depth of argument, that's ridiculous. There's no argument as to why the two clauses are similar enough that the repeal of one should lead to the repeal of the other.

0 wrote:Believing that individual members are more than capable of negotiating their own free trade agreements - comprehensive or otherwise - without having to be babysat by the WA in the process...

This is a natsov (national sovereignty) argument, which is generally frowned upon. If the World Assembly is to be restricted by a nation's right to do literally anything it wants as a sovereign power, then there is no reason for the World Assembly to exist. It is, by its very nature, an international organisation that imposes regulations on the whole to make things easier for everyone individually when dealing with other nations. Like, I don't know, during multilateral trade talks.

This proposal puts forward perhaps the worst series of arguments I've seen in some time from a GA proposal. I strongly recommend voting against.

"What risks do the time crystals pose when damaged, however?"

Little to none. The only risk is to smack two crystals together, which would generate a pulse of Gamma V (purest form of energy). Gamma V can't harm humans or animals, but it could overload the systems of a ship, causing major blackouts and light injuries. After the pulse happened, the remains of the crystals would merge together, creating a unstable Gamma V crystal.

However, the newer itinerations of the EQ-25 Magnetic Containment Unit can handle the blast and secure the Gamma V crystal singlehandedly.

Hey everyone, thought I'd drop an opinion on the upcoming (as in 30 minutes from now) GA proposal going to vote, Repeal: Preparing for Disasters. It's targeting resolution GAR #105.

I'm not a fan of this repeal draft. I think that it's going after nitpicks, which are a pet peeve of mine when it comes to this current wave of "Let's repeal all of the old resolutions that were never repealed before now because they're actually reasonably solid."

Clause one of the repeal draft is going after a section of the original resolution on the idea that it could possibly be taken advantage of if nobody at the World Assembly Disaster Bureau (WADB) was actually paying any attention or doing their jobs. Araraukar in the drafting thread has a good counterargument to this where they state that, because all departments in the World Assembly are built to be infallible and immune to stupid mistakes, this is a nothing clause.

Clause two addresses a concern that information about disaster relief would have to be shared with everyone. I guess I don't really have to say much on this, it's a long-standing Refugi position that all information should be open-source and widely available so that everyone can mutually benefit. I really hate this scaremongering "malicious actors" talk when what we're discussing isn't nuclear weaponry, it's life-saving technologies to be used in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. No, everyone should be able to survive a disaster, we're not creating an us vs. them dynamic there.

Clause three, finally, is the biggest reach of them all. It states that, because a clause in the target resolution says the WADB must work with "all departments in the WA", that could be a burden on operations. This is actually just a non-issue. It's kind of ridiculous to make this a clause in your repeal draft, because of course they're not going to be working with entirely irrelevant departments.

I'm going to be voting against as soon as this is up to vote.

We simply negotiate the deal, either on this board (which I prefer) or via Telegram (if you feel more comfortable to discuss trade deals in privet). We ask one another what each nation would like to purchase and what it can offer in return, then announce the deal on this board.

This is pure roleplay; it has absolutely no effect on your game-side statistsics, which are affected 100% by your decisions on issues.

Allokyus wrote:Hi there, President of Allokyus here, and with big news. Our scientists managed to run trials for our Alcubierre drive and it ran smoothly. They also discovered the mysterious Time Crystals, which are the result of the warp drive. These crystals can be used as fuel for the reactors of the star frigate, and they can also simulate the effects of a singularity without risking being S U C C into a black hole.

The hull of the ship is complete and the weapon systems are being tested. We can expect the ship to be commissioned in about two weeks. President of Allokyus out.

This is so exciting! Please keep us posted. We would like to send a Reserach Scientist aboard your first Inter-galactic ship. President Anne-Marie Juliette out.

Blue

Aside from the regular metal-like colors like iron or silver, I do like rusty and worn-out colors. Silent Hill comes to mind, but also, like, rusty gold.

I use this shade of faded gold in a game as a metal accent and I think it looks really nice. I also really like how greens and blues can look as metal shades.
